Tufa is formed when freshwater springs that are rich in calcium bubble up into water that has carbonate in it. This is just the case at Mono Lake. The calcium and carbonate combine to form calcium carbonate salt deposits, called tufa. Over time these deposits develop into vertical towers. Because the water level at Mono Lake has dropped many deposits have become visible above the surface creating an unusual view. Click here to find out more about Mono Lake.
