The coloring of this creature identify it as a red eft, an immature eastern salamander. It was bravely crossing the roadway. Unfortunately, many of them were not making it safely to the other side. I provided a little roadside assistance to this little one. To get a sense of size of this creature, the photo below shows it next to my foot.
