Poison oak has a distinctive three leaf pattern. You can also usually detect a shine from the oils in the leaves, and they often have some reddish coloring. But be careful, poison oak sometimes has no leaves or the leaves may just be green. It also may grow as a vine or like a bush. Regardless, getting the oils on one's skin tends to cause a significant rash. The rash may not show up for a day or two after contact.
