According to the informational sign at this spot in Capitol Reef National Park (Utah), Fremont Indians carved these petroglyphs about a thousand years ago before abandoning the area. There is little left to tell the tale of their existence here. The sign also said: "These petroglyphs might have been part of a ceremony to ensure good hunting. Yet the human shapes seem to be more than everyday hunters. Had bighorn sheep become scarce, requiring supernatural creatures or a shaman to entice them back? By etching their imaginations on canyon walls, the Fremonts have communed with the earth, with the spirit world, and with people who came after."
