I encountered this snake in Nevada after leaving the town of Rachel. It was crossing the road ahead of me when I spotted it. It moved quickly and easily. I stopped my bike and I was able to watch it for a few minutes as it made its way into the brush on the far side of the road. I do not know what kind of snake this is. Do you know? Can you find it in a book and let me know? The black markings running along its back are quite distinctive. I also noticed that as it moved it always had a bend in its neck. See the photo below for a close-up. Is this the trademark of this type of snake or is it injured? This was a big snake and probably measured three feet long when stretched out.

*3/21/02- I have been informed by Roger Myers that this
is a Great Basin Gopher Snake. Thanks, Roger!*
