Mission

The Coast to Coast Discovery Ride is a benefit and outreach project of the Environmental Volunteers. Its goals are to:

  • educate children about the natural world
  • encourage volunteerism
  • create connections between environmental organizations
  • raise funds for natural science education
  • promote sustainable energy
  • demonstrate a positive use of the latest technology

More Details

The Coast to Coast Discovery Ride begins at the beginning of June when I embark on a solo, cross-country bicycle trip, pedaling from the San Francisco Bay Area to Maine (a distance of over 4,300 miles!).

I have been the Office Manager for the Environmental Volunteers for two years (98-00) and I recently left the position to become a volunteer Ambassador-on-a-Bike. I will carry over 50 lbs of gear which will allow me to camp out at night as well as undertake an educational and fun web project.

Using a small computer and a digital camera, I will regularly upload photos and journal entries about my adventures to this website. This online journal will focus on the environmental diversity of the U.S. I am connecting with classrooms in year-round elementary schools and other educational organizations, in the San Francisco Bay Area and across the country, to interact with the students via email and the web. Additionally, I will meet with other environmental organizations along my route, learn about their programs, and share my findings with you here.

Adding to the environmental integrity of this endeavor, I am carrying a small solar array to recharge all of my battery powered equipment without using an electrical outlet.

I look forward to sharing the Coast to Coast Discovery Ride with you!

Sincerely,
Mike Kahn
