Note: As the organized guy that I am, I have a list in my
journal telling me which items are in which of my pannier
bags. This was especially handy right at the beginning of my
trip and so that I do not forget what to bring next
time.
Camping Supplies
first-aid kit- REI Hiker
toilet paper
2 small pots and 1 pan- Evernew
cup, knife, fork , spoon- durable plastic
biodegradeable soap, sponge, and dish towel
cigarette lighter & waterproof matches
food sack- with emergency food
Swiss Army knife
stove- MSR Whisperlite International (can use different
kinds of fuel)
22oz. fuel bottle- MSR
(bug spray)- I decided to go without and the mosquitoes are
laughing at me. Make sure to get the envirionmentally
friendly kind made from citrus.
flashlight- one that mounts on your head, like the Petzl, is
very convenient
tent- North Face Slickrock
tarp- I use an emergency blanket since it is a dual purpose
item
sleeping pad- Z-Rest Long from
Therm-a-Rest
garbage bags- to stuff everything in really wet
conditions
Clothing
one cotton t-shirt (I would actually recommend a
faster drying fabric.)
pant/short combo- REI Safari Convertible Pants (light, dry
fast)
sandals- Tevas (I am not carrying shoes but I do have
waterproof socks.)
long underwear- REI mid-weight bottoms
wool socks- REI medium thick hiking socks
underwear- one pair (I don't wear underwear with my bike
shorts! They fit better and chafe less.)
warm hat and another hat for the sun
Polartec jacket- REI 200 zip-up fleece
waterproof jacket- REI Randonee biking jacket (bright
color)
waterproof pants- REI Randonee pants (black, add reflective
tape)
Bike Gear
bike shorts- two pairs of mountain bike shorts (I
have one pair of Swobo's and one pair of Nema's. I recommend
the Swobo's. Their thick padding really helps when you are
in the saddle all day.)
water- Camelbak Mule 100oz., 3 large water bottles, 4 L MSR
bag, 32oz. emergency water bottle (I only fill the MSR bag
as needed.)
bike socks- two pairs
bike shoes- Sidi mtn. bike shoes
bike jerseys- two short sleeve, one long sleeve
bike gloves- REI
helmet w/rear-view mirror- Giro helmet, Cyclaware mirror (A
mirror really helps!
bike lights- Cateye Front Halogen (4 AA batteries) &
Rear Red LED (2 AAAs)
pannier bags- Jandd Mtn. Expeditions in back and Mini Mtns.
in Front (I have raincovers for the front but they will not
fit on the rear because of my solar array.)
handlebar bag- REI Deluxe
journal for notes (I use a spiral 7 3/4" by 5"
notebook.)
leg warmers- Trek
warm bike gloves- REI Concepts
waterproof socks- bought through Adventure Cycling
Association
warm bike cap- fits under helmet
tools/spares- Conti Top Touring tire, 2 tubes, patch kit,
multi-tool, spare spokes, adjustable wrench, pliers,
chainlinks, nuts & bolts, rag, oil, bottom bracket and
cogset tools
pump- Zefal hpx3 frame model
cable & lock- Kryptonite
bike cover- Bicycle Jam keeps the bike cleaner, drier, and
less tempting to try to steal at night.
Bicycle
bike- Miyata Koga Road Gentleman touring bike w/
Shimano 105 components- from American Cyclery, San
Francisco
gearing- front: 54, 38, 24; rear: 11-28 (7 speed)
wheelset- Fir SC200s, handbuilt- American Cyclery
pedals- Time Atac alium (Good float for healthy knees!)
drop handlebars w/ bar end shifting
tires- Continental 28C Top Touring 2000 tires
seat- Terry Buzz Off
kickstand- This is a very worthwhile investment. I can stand
my bike up on relatively flat surfaces and search for gear,
go in a store, etc. Having to lean the bike on something is
a pain and it is also easier for me to keep the solar panels
charging. I added it at the suggestion from Phil at Start to
Finish Bicycles.
racks- Jandd Mtn. Expedition Rear rack & Low Front
rack
cyclometer- Sigma Sport Targa
Nature Gear
binoculars- Minolta waterproof
journal for taking notes
Peterson Field Guide: Medicinal Plants & Herbs,
Eastern/.Central North America
Peterson First Guides: Mammals, Birds, Trees, Insects,
Weather, Rocks, Astronomy
Some magnifying glasses to hand out to a few kids along the
way
